The Flyer a member on CLLSA on HU will be cycling from Lands End to John O'Groats to raise funds for Bloodwise and CLLSA.

TheFlyer is going to cycle from Land's End to John O'Groats as a challenge by someone with CLL and to raise funds to help support the work of CLLSA.

A note of support from Prof Anna Schuh

"When I first heard about TheFlyer's plans I told him and his partner that Ithought he'd gone seriously mad: 1000 miles in 13 days from Cornwall to Scotland?

Now, after nearly 2 years of preparation and having got to know TheFlyer's determination, I say that he can be so proud of his achievements: having previously raised 11k for research into leukaemia.

As an academic clinician trying to improve outcomes for CLL patients, I support TheFlyer' efforts 150%. Without patients like him, hardly anybody would know about blood cancers let alone CLL and important research across the UK is only possible thanks to donations raised by "mad" initiatives like this one.

Therefore a VERY BIG THANK YOU to TheFlyer and his team for all their efforts.

Kind regards

Anna

The Flyers Journey to this Fundraiser

In the summer of 2010 I noticed at work that they supported the Cycle to work scheme and I had always fancied a racing bike so I took the plunge I just loved it.

In March 2010 after a routine Blood test you have Blood Cancer, Leukaemia and I would need to be seen straight away, Bone Marrow biopsy - I didn't hear much else - Then two days later my Dr said he may have got it wrong so after a further Blood test he asked if I could pop down and see him. He then said it was CLL the good Cancer.

In 2011 I saw a sign for the Rugby Coventry Bikeathon raising money for Leukaemia & Lymphoma research I though I could do that 50 miles a bit far but worth it raised over 1000.00 and was quite pleased did it again the next year.

2013 I needed a bigger Challenge so I signed up for London to Paris Cycle ride raised over 8700.00 for Leukaemia and Lymphoma research that was an amazing experience then in 2014 I did nothing but started thinking of another challenge, my Blood counts were ok the WBC was going up slowly but my Haemoglobin and Platelets were fine.

I didn't want to Cycle 1000 miles without raising as much money as I could so decided to start fundraising also I wanted to help CLLSA as they had helped me enormously

It was at one of there support meetings at Oxford that I meet Dr Anna Schuh she is an amazing woman, so feed up with my Geriatric consultant who always had one eye on me and one on the clock at appointments he soon became history and I now see Anna.

I must say the CLLSA support group with all there Knowledge experience has been comforting at times when Cancer rears it head – so I want to thank you for what you have done for me personally and I wanted to help the Charity to continue there excellent work and everything they do.

I am on watch and wait or active surveillance as Anna calls it so with all the fundraising I thought I might try and do something might make a difference might not but at least I have to try (Cll couldn't do anything to me anyway that I hadn't already done to myself)

I think if you can and are able to help by raising funds then it is a good thing I like the challenge of trying to get people part with there Money.

Training started Jan 1st – reality was I had man flu so it didn't start until the 14th of Jan I have a personal trainer so I told him of the cll and he said his Dad has leukaemia and he would gladly help me.

We set to work - you know sometimes when you go to the Gym you go at your own pace...... well not anymore I go at his there is even an excuse column on my training program that gets updated when I tell why I haven't done this or that.

Initially I was enthusiastic and it was time to shift a few pounds all was going well till I got to the point where the weight wasn't moving and the Cycling seemed to be going nowhere - why am I doing this I don't have to.

For some reason shortly after the above and my trainer saying stick with it I lost 8lbs knocked two minutes and 32 seconds of my timed route I was happy progress at last yes I can do this.

I have 8 weeks before we set off for the ride and I can tell you I just can't wait to get going I will give you weekly up dates up until then and keep you posted on how it goes each day.

Going back to the oxford meeting there is a couple who we meet who has been in touch and want to help with our fundraising.

If there are any members who are local to Daventry who want to help out at our fundraising on Saturday 21st May then you are most welcome – we could do with a few more cake makers

I have an interim Blood test in May but then it's all systems go for the ride
